A Real Life Story

Beyond the core of duties...

Read this story on Reader Digest, which wet my eyes. Shall not reveal anything now read on to find out yourself.

My Unexpected Teacher

During my first seven semesters as a medical student at Gadjahmada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, I spend most of my time studying and in classrooms. I rarely spoke with real patients in a hospital setting. Then last year I started visiting the neurology ward at Dr. Sardijito Hospital.

I was gathering date for my thesis, an assessment of the oral contraceptive pill as a risk factor for ischemic strokes. This type of stroke is the most common and it occurs as a result of an obstruction within a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain. At the hospital I would review the medical records of newly admitted stroke patients, then interview them to find out if they were taking the pill. It was a slow process.

One cold, rainy evening last October, I was in the neurology ward desperately "hunting" for the final three patients I needed to complete my study. The record showed that there was a 43-years-old stroke patient, whom I will call Ms A, in the ward.

Holding a patient questionnaire, I walked towards her room. I didn't see any doctors or nurses; the ward was quiet. Ms A's dimly lit room had eight beds. I could see dark clouds and heavy raindrops through the window. The familiar "hospital odour" hung in the chill air.

Ms A was lying on bed 4B, clearly still weak as she was still recovering from her recent stroke. There were no relatives or friends with her. Even the bed beside her was empty. I sat down on a chair next to her bed, and in a low voice I introduced myself and asked how she was doing. She softly replied that she was getting better but the left side of her body was still weak. When I told her that I wanted to gather some additional information from her, she agreed.

The questionnaire consisted of three simple yes-or-no questions. After I finished, I prepared to leave so I could go through more medical records. Before I could stand up, Ms A spoke up in her weak voice. "I haven't seen you here before, doc. Are you new?"
"Not really, Ma'am. It's just that I don't come here every day," I replied. She started making conversation, asking where i was from and why I was working this late in the evening. I was surprised someone in her condition would want to talk.
"Doc, do you think I can get back my normal life?" Ms A asked at one point.
Deep in my heart, I though, God, I wish I was your doctor so I could answer you properly.
I replied that while I didn't know much about her case, I could tell her what I had learn about the recovery of stroke patients. Depending on the severity of the stroke, quite a number respond well to rehabilitation. I was reluctant to go into too much detail as I was only a medical student.

Ms A started talking about herself. She told me that she had three children in primary school, who were staying with a neighbour. "My husband died a year ago and I'm the sole breadwinner of my family. We are not rich and my pay as a cleaner is exactly enough for me and my kids."
I didn't know what to say. Looking into her eyes, I desperately tried to remember the lessons from a communication skill class I had taken a few years earlier, but my mind was blank. I cursed myself for not paying more attention.

Without realising it, I had begun holding Ms A's hand. Since I didn't have anything to say, I just sat quietly  while she talked. That's when it occurred to me that she was not expecting any reply from me. She just wanted me to listen.

The conversation went on like this for about 20 minutes. She shared her difficulties and sufferings, talked about her husband, who was killed in a car accident, and her struggles to earn money. She also expressed her fear about what would become of her children if something bad happened to her. All I did was nod my head as a way of showing my sympathy.

Finally, Ms A stopped talking. "I'm very sorry for keeping you here to listen to my problems, but I feel relieved now. I had no-one to pour out my problems to."
A single tear fell from the corner of her eye. I stroke her hair and continued to hold her hand. Finally, I knew what to say. "It's OK, Ma'am. It's part of my duty."
"Thank you, doc, thank you so much."
She let go of my hand. I stood up, covered her with a blanket, waved goodbye and left her alone in her bed. A few days later, when I returned to the ward, I discovered that Ms A had been discharged as her condition had improved, though she would still need rehabilitation.
Ms A taught me one of the most important lessons a doctor can learn. Sometimes patients do not need expensive medicine or state-of-the-art technology. They just need someone with the patience and willingness to lend an ear and spare a little of their time. For me, that is one of the best things a doctor can do for a patient.
Extraction from Reader Digest Oct issue,

Congratulation for those who have read this story till the end.
For those who can't be bothered to finish this story, i could only say, you have just missed a very important lesson with money can't buy.

alright ! off to finishing my Reader Digest ! :D

UFC, MMA, K1, Pride ! Fight !

Have been watching all kind of fighting videos  from UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), K1(Mainly Kick Boxing), Pride.

Inclusive of , Muay Thai, Karate, Taekwondon, Savate, San ShouBrazilian JujitsuWrestling. Which are all physically demanding as well as mentally challenging !
And among all fighters my favourite would be Mirko Filipović(on the left) AKA "Mirko Cro Cop" is a Croatian law enforcement officer turned kickboxer and mixed martial artist (MMA). He is also a former member (2003 - 2007) of Croatian Parliament. His nickname, short for "Croatian Cop", comes from his membership in the Croatian police's Anti-Terrorist Group ATJ Lučko.

But What makes him respectable, is his determination and his never step away attitude even when facing opponent bigger then him. Also his fighting style mainly kickboxing and his finishing move, left round house kick which targets the head -deadly- gets the audiences  adrenaline pumping (including me).

Signature Kick -Left Round House Kick

if you are interested in finding out more about him, just type "mirko cro cop" and google him out.

I'm 90% recovered : D ! off to books.

Almost left out something on sunday ! i ate spaghetti, nothing special right you must be thinking. But it really tasted really GREAT :) at least to me, its sweetness from within my heart. opps .. i forgotten that i have long gave my heart to someone :D hahaa.. yum yum !

Laksa Makan Trip

Warning - Heavy Photo Entry. read at own risk !

What a fine Tuesday morning, having 3 different individuals from the family to abruptly wake me up from my slumber - Mom aka ( Routine Checker), Dad aka ( Busybody;Concern ) and younger sis aka ( Cutest out of 3 ).
Took off from work yesterday without giving prior notice to my family. Therefore, that's the result for not informing before hand!
What was my reply from being further disturbed ? "Today is Sunday la, let me have more rest."
Mom: " Huh ? today is Tuesday, you sure you don't have work?"
Me:"Yes, there's no work today."
Mom: "Ok =.="
After chasing my mom away, came my dad (who told mom that i might have taken off from work) to reassure that i don't have work.

Dad: No work or Off ?
Me: "Today is Sunday la, there's no work!"
Dad: *Silently retreat from my room*

Then came the most lovable in the family !
Sis: "Kor, you today don't need to go to work ?"
Me: "No, It's Sunday will you mind ?"
Sis: "Ok." *putting a pillow over my head*
And asked "Do you need me to draw the curtains for you ?"
Me: "how sweet, but it's ok."

At that point of time, i was already half awaken ! and beyond returning to sleep thanks to them . What a morning !
And i actually repeated saying "it's Sunday today" 3 times !

Met Juliana yesterday for lunch at Roxy Square for the infamous Laksa. Took a really long 135 bus journey from Ang Mo Kia to East of Singapore. verdict - 7/10 score for the very thick laksa soup, not too spicy but doesn't lack the punch that it should have.

A shot taken while traveling to Roxy Square

Attempting to Grab Singapore Flyer with our Fingers !
Fyi: that's her fingers; mine is the first photo.
After our very "sumptuous" lunch, headed down to town for a movie.
"Mirrors" brilliant displays of what a classic horror flick should have ! or maybe is because the last horror movie i watched was way too long ago ?
What ever it's Mirrors didn't disappoint the expectation of us being horrified by it.
Some very gruesome scenes of killing they portrait. Overall 3/5 ?
Vain people do very much avoid this ! :P
If I'm overrating it do drop me a comment, will very much appreciate them.

Few more shots on the way back for dinner

Dinner was served chief like style ! food was delicious ! guess what, home cook food still taste the best ! But there's still room for improvement for my mom that is XD
Hahaha ! Ok should stop criticizing my mom's cooking, not that she don't cook well enough just that she find it too troublesome to cook her best dishes ! :( *poor me

Guess who this is ? :)

Work work work ! :)

Downs and Ups

This Picture was taken sometime ago, but only uploaded it as i was looking through previous photos. does it resemble a rose, what do you think ?

FYI - It's a Cup of ice cream made by artistic her !

One major turn off for the day of Friday, i dropped my Camp pass which was super important ! because of the faulty clipper which was holding onto the attached card i hang on my left chest pocket for identification purposes in camp.

Which resulted an 1 hr 30 mins full floor to grass search on the route which i often walk back to home. After an extensive/desperate search for my missing camp pass, no effort came to avail. Leaving me physically and psychologically exhausted for the day and not to mention having my girlfriend waiting for me for dinner.

Didn't had the mood to eat upon returning home, took a shower and lied down on my bed leaving her with very little options. But she was very understanding instead from pulling me up from the bed she suggested buying food back for me, although my reply was still pretty negative she still gave me a peck before leaving and reconfirm that i wasn't hungry still when she's about to return after dinner with my family. awww.. such caring gestures only a mad woman would do XD ( ok a little exaggerating things )

what a fortunate me : )

Enough of my very unsettle state of mind which extended to my weekends ! But Fortunately i manage to get back my lost camp pass when i visit the guard house this morning to exchange for a visitor pass as I was having duties today. Thank GOD ! phew what a close shave, i could have easily gotten extras for losing it.

Met up with Qiutin yesterday at Somerset with her both blissed feet which she gotten from playing badminton. Chatted and had a long lunch at Heeren's new dining level in a restaurant called "da ka jie" which in Cantonese means big sister ?* in doubt personally due to lack of Cantonese knowledge.

Here's some of the dishes we had that noon. Signature Roasted Duck and Special Char Siew Ramen. including the drink and respective charges the bill only topped $37 dollars rounding off the cents.
Signature Roasted Duck - Yummy !
And my very normal "Sepcial Char Siew Ramen"
Ahhhh... what is a weekend without your special other right ? that's why later part of the day was spend with her. :)

Walked around town and was requested to take some photos while drinking "COKE ZERO" =.=
Ended up having extra Coke zero on the hand, so i decided to get some Mentos's extra strong mint to test out the chemical reaction between Coke and Mentos. Experimental results was as expected ! thrilling !! ok I'm wasting coke as well as money to buy Mentos. But nevertheless i have gotten a chance to witness the experimental first hand !

Here's our Japanese dinner at Cuppage plaza ! Super economic as compared to other eateries in town. Yummy !
Shio Ramen
Breaded pork cutlet curry rice
And Gyoza ! of course !
no.2 set of gyoza for the stomach !
A night shot of the national museum
A snap shot of us :)
That's all the now !

P.s. it's a long post i know, please bare with me as the journalist in me have just returned from his long vacation.

Returning

How long has it been since i last posted my self-shots ? :D

Anyway have been looking through Facebook and found tales i wrote previously on "Human Pet"
And i guess quite a lot of people mistakenly thought that i copied and paste them onto my own tales :P
ANS: NOPE, i wrote them all by myself : P

Big dream takes lots of tiny efforts to realize
making dream come alive is difficult yet achievable
why wait ? don't wait anymore !
it's time for your dream to come true :).

A hug can mean a lot of times,
sometimes you hug the person you miss,
sometimes you hug a person when you are sad
sometimes you hug a person when you receive good news
sometimes you hug when you are in love
sometimes you hug with no reasons

But one reason to hug - hugs does bring love/warmth and security :)

onwards to work now .. will be back soon !
